My rant about sports games
Just to let you know, I'm not a sports person. I mean, I watch them once in a while, but I don't follow them. Basketball has so many rules that it's hard to follow. Baseball is boring, I couldn't get into Football, I'm not impressed with Golf and I don't mind Soccer. I like Tennis and Hockey because these sports keep you on your toes. When it comes to Boxing it's hard to appreciate the fighter's skill level or lack thereof because everyone is doing the same thing as far as throwing punches. UFC offsets that a bit, but it still has the same fundamental problem. This is what I liked about the WWE before 2007; we see different wrestlers wrestle each other with different styles.
With all that said, this is the main problem I have with sports games; that is trying to simulate the sport. Video games are suppose to be fun, doing that takes the fun out of it. It looks like we were going to get that in the 2000s. Before that, we had a handful of fun sports games. We only had Punch-Out, NBA Jam, Wave Race, and Tony Hawk Pro Skater at that time. Like I said, the 2000s was the best time for sports games. We didn't have to rely on a sports title with Mario in it; we had other alternatives. Like NFL Blitz, in that game, you get to perform wrestling moves on the players. Sega Sports at that time gave us some fun titles as well, like Sega Tennis and Soccer.
EA Sports Big gave us the street games with the arcade style game play. There is one Tony Hawk game where you can play as Spider-Man. The WWE games are fun to play by default dispite not all of them are up in quality. I thought we would get more studios that would make sports games fun to play, sadly, that didn't happen. From the 2010's til now, we barely see those types of games. Besides the Mario games, we only had WWE All-Stars and UFC Undisputed 3. The companies that made the games I mentioned before either went bankrupt or out of business. I get that can happen, and it sucks, but one in the game industry wants to capitalize on this sub-genre of games? The last sports game that I enjoyed playing was UFC 4 because it had different modes of play, fun locations, and I liked the create your fighter selection.
I hope this sub-genre makes a comeback; if not, well, it was fun while it lasted.
